Bongo often adds life to any musical set played in a group setting with a complex yet fun kind of tune. Bongos comprise two open-bottomed small drums connected by a wooden peck. They usually played in pairs where a drum is larger than the other. The large drum is known as the hembra (female), while the smaller is the macho (male).
Originating in the Eastern Region of Cuba, bongos are played by striking the drums' edge with the fingers and palms. Others use a drumstick to play. By tradition, players hold the drums behind their knees, with the larger one on the right. Nowadays, players use a stand for convenience, especially with another percussion setup or more formal playing.
